OUR SCHOOL

Thank you for taking the time to read about Creative Ark!

We are a school of creative learning, where art and science come together to facilitate deeper learning.

At Creative Ark deeper learning means nurturing our students’ natural curiosity to question how things work

and how they are connected. This is done by providing a ‘spark’ that will instigate a process of learning through joy and curiosity.

Our carefully designed curriculum has three focal points;

'SPARK', 'CREATE', 'GROW'

1. 'SPARK' - Introduction to various scientific areas of study

(to increase students' general knowledge and deepen their already existing knowledge.)

2. 'CREATE' - Introduction to art theory, history and technique

(to expose the students to a variety of art techniques, classical and contemporary artists/art movements)

3. 'GROW' - Encourages each student to find their unique art style and ways of learning.

This enables us to have a structured and focused approach along with flexibility

that support our students individuality.

Our students are constantly reminded that they are the artists and are in charge of their own art making.

That their ideas and decisions matter.

Participation in our program empowers our students to have a sense of ownership over their own

learning, their ideas and capabilities. They learn that giving things a go is the most important creative act they can do in class and in life.

HOW IS CREATIVE ARK DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR ART CLASSES?

The focus of most art schools is on developing technical proficiency. For example, how to draw or paint better, or master skills of printmaking or sculpture. Let’s be clear, this approach is brilliant and important.

However, at Creative Ark we do things differently. For us, the starting point is a concept or a field of study. It could be scientific concepts of anatomy, blood, micro-biome, space, marine biology, architecture, history or concepts of emotional intelligence or school readiness like literacy and numeracy.

Each class has a different theme to spark and awaken our students’ curiosity. Once they are curious about something, their brains are alert and ready to soak up as much information as they can.

Then comes the creative, messy fun of exploring these themes through art. Our students might paint, draw, collage, print or sculpt. While they do this, an experienced art educator is giving them technical direction.

For our students, acquiring technical skills is a byproduct of a deeper learning,

rather than the primary focus of the classes.

Research into hybrid programs like ours, that combine creative arts and science, consistently show that students learn easier, retain information longer and are able to build on their existing knowledge.

Research also shows that participating in creative activity is good for physical and mental health. It lowers blood pressure, reduces stress and anxiety and improves cognitive function.
